Does removing the Gemini watermark remove SynthID? Visible vs invisible watermarks
Gemini marks images twice: a visible sparkle and an invisible SynthID watermark. What each one is, and what a watermark remover can and can’t change.

Images and videos from Gemini carry two different watermarks. People often mix them up, so here's a plain explanation of both — and what removing the visible one does and doesn't change.
The visible watermark
The small white sparkle in the bottom-right corner. It's there so that a person looking at the image can see it was made with Gemini. It's blended into a small area of the corner — 48 or 96 pixels across on the images we measured — which is why it can be calculated away exactly.
SynthID, the invisible watermark
SynthID is a watermark developed by Google DeepMind. Instead of sitting in one corner, it's spread across the image as tiny changes to pixel values that people can't see. It's designed so that software can still detect it after common edits such as cropping, resizing, filters or compression. Google uses it to tell whether an image was made with its AI tools.
What a watermark remover changes
Our tool removes only the visible sparkle. It recalculates the pixels under the logo and leaves everything else exactly as it was. SynthID is not targeted, and we don't offer tools that try to remove it. Because SynthID is spread across the whole image and we change only the corner, it is designed to remain detectable.
Why we draw the line there
Removing a logo from the corner of your own image is a cosmetic choice: it gets in the way of a design, a thumbnail or a print. Hiding that an image was made with AI is different, and in some places it breaks the law or a platform's rules. Leaving SynthID intact means the image stays identifiable as AI-generated even without the visible mark.
Do I still need to label AI images?
Possibly. Some laws and platforms require AI-generated or AI-edited content to be disclosed — the EU AI Act and India's IT Rules are examples — and many social networks ask you to tag AI content. Removing the visible sparkle doesn't change those obligations. If in doubt, add a label. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I turn the watermark off in Gemini instead?
Google has started offering a setting that turns off the visible watermark for some images and videos, though not everywhere. It doesn't affect SynthID, which is still added.
Frequently asked questions
- Does removing the Gemini watermark remove SynthID?
- No. Only the visible sparkle in the corner is removed. SynthID is spread across the whole image and is left alone.
- Can SynthID be seen?
- No. It consists of tiny changes to pixel values that people can’t see; it is meant to be detected by software.
